Today marks a significant occasion as we celebrate International Women's Day, an embodiment of the strength, resilience, and contributions of women around the globe. Reflecting on this day fills me with a profound sense of empowerment and gratitude, especially after a week that shone a spotlight on the incredible women who, through their passion and purpose, enrich our world in countless ways.
The history of International Women's Day is deeply rooted in the struggle for women's rights, dating back over a century. It originated from the labor movements of the early 20th century in North America and Europe, evolving from a day of protest for women's labor rights into a global day of recognition and celebration of women's achievements across all sectors of society. Since the United Nations officially recognised March 8th as International Women's Day in 1975, it has grown into a worldwide observance that not only honours women's achievements but also emphasises the ongoing quest for gender equality.
On this day, I am reminded of the women who paved the way for the freedoms and rights many of us enjoy today. Their courage and determination in the face of adversity inspire me to reflect on my own journey. Like many of you, I've faced trials and tribulations, moments of self-doubt, and challenges that seemed insurmountable. Yet, here we are, standing strong and continuing to push forward, fuelled by the same unyielding spirit that characterised our foremothers.
It's easy to recognise the greatness in other women – our mothers, sisters, friends, and mentors – and to celebrate their contributions. However, today, I encourage you to also turn that appreciation inward. Take a moment to thank yourself for:
- The mind that navigates through life's complexities with wisdom and grace.
- The heart that loves, endures, and remains open, even after facing heartbreak.
- The body that carries you through every moment, every challenge, and every triumph.
We often harbour feelings of not being enough, of striving for a perfection that diminishes our worth. Today, let's set aside those doubts. You are indeed enough, more than enough. Your contributions, no matter how small they may seem, ripple through the fabric of our society and make a difference. You are a beacon of hope, a wellspring of love, and an agent of change in your unique way.
So, as we celebrate International Women's Day today, let's embrace the collective achievements and the personal victories. Let's honour the women who have come before us, stand in solidarity with those who continue to fight for equality, and recognise the incredible women we see in the mirror every day. Here's to you, to us, and to a future where every day is a celebration of women's empowerment, resilience, and brilliance.
