Honestly, I never imagined I’d reach this point.
That Friday, I attended a conference as a newly qualified Life Coach. I was thrilled, but I was also incredibly nervous.
I vividly remember sitting alone during lunch, trying to keep my composure, pondering what the future held. The uncertainty was daunting.
Fast forward to nearly 5 years later, and I've learned so much about coaching and running a business. I wish I could travel back in time to reassure my younger self. Since I can't, I’m here to share these lessons with YOU, fellow coach, to hopefully save you some time and stress.
Ready? Let’s dive in!
LESSON 1: FOCUS ON QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
In my early days, I tried to emulate every successful coach I saw. When I launched, I offered SIX different coaching packages. Guess how many people signed up? None.
Why? I was spreading myself too thin and couldn’t effectively communicate the benefits of each package. I believed that offering more would attract more clients, but it only led to confusion (even in areas I wasn’t passionate about).
Once I realised the importance of clarity and passion in my offerings, things changed. I focused on one package, perfected it, and started charging £1500 for 1:1 coaching. Only then did my business take off. Over the years, I ventured into writing a book, creating a group coaching program, running retreats, and launching a DIY program. Looking back, I wish I had done less but done it better. Success would have come much faster.
LESSON 2: GROW INTO YOUR PRICING
Talking about my pricing was nerve-wracking at first. Sales consultations were awkward because I wasn’t confident in asking for money. I wish I had known that practice makes perfect.
I started by saying my prices out loud at home, over and over until it felt natural. As I became more comfortable, my consultations improved. Remember, your pricing can evolve as you grow. Start where you’re comfortable and increase as you gain confidence and experience.
LESSON 3: AVOID COMPARISONS WITH MORE EXPERIENCED COACHES
Comparing yourself to those ahead of you is a recipe for frustration. We all start from scratch, and everyone’s journey is unique.
LESSON 4: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Skills like sales and writing improve with use. My first sales consultation was a sweaty disaster. My first blog post? A cringe-worthy experience. But now, these tasks are second nature. Practice is the key.
LESSON 5: DON’T PROCRASTINATE
I delayed opening my coaching practice for months and hesitated for years before stepping out. I’m grateful I took the leap when I did, but I often wonder what might have been if I’d started sooner. Life is short – don’t wait too long to pursue your dreams.
LESSON 6: EMBRACE YOUR UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE
Being neutral won’t make you stand out. It’s okay to have strong opinions and share them. It will make you more engaging and relatable, and attract clients who resonate with your views. Those who don’t align with you wouldn’t have hired you anyway. These are not your people.
LESSON 7: YOUR PERSONALITY IS YOUR STRENGTH
Initially, I hid my sense of humour, but now I embrace it. It sets me apart and makes my work enjoyable. Formality isn’t always necessary in marketing – being genuine and human is more impactful.
LESSON 8: PUBLISH YOUR SCARIEST CONTENT
The posts that terrify you are often the ones that resonate the most. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
LESSON 9: START SMALL AND ITERATE
Perfectionism can be paralysing. I’ve launched small, low-cost programs to test ideas without pressure. This approach has led to amazing revenue. Don’t let the quest for perfection stop you from making progress.
LESSON 10: LEARN TO RUN A BUSINESS
Learning business skills is invaluable. Whether your business succeeds or fails, the skills you gain are priceless and will serve you in any career. Investing in your business knowledge increases your chances of success.
LESSON 11: BUILD RESILIENCE
Running a business will make you stronger and more resilient. You’ll face challenges, but you’ll also learn and grow from them.
